There are over 400 types of bananas in the world. They can basically be divided in two categories: plantains and dessert bananas.
Plantains are bananas that have a hard texture and have to be cooked before they can be eaten. Plantains can be quite large as some can be over a foot long. French plantain and Horn plantain are two varieties of plantains.
Dessert bananas are a lot softer and can be eaten without being cooked. They are more common than plantains. The Cavendish banana is the most common variety and is the one we eat almost exclusively. The red banana is red as it's name indicates. The baby banana is characterized by it's small size.
The stage of the banana's life is important when describing it. a younger Cavendish banana is green and hard. As it ripens it will become softer and it's colour will become yellow and eventually brown or even black.
Almost all bananas are curved. However, the degree of the curve varies.
The curve can be explained by the way bananas grow. As they grow, the bananas will grow upwards to reach towards the sun and get more light.
