Ok I try this time to be more direct. I'll post some photos, and I'll keep only some written guidelines. I think it might be clearer during the presentation and enough to unterstand our work (at least for my part where, I guess, visuals are strongly required).
Thanks Nicolas though - The materials you've posted are pretty cool and will allow people to go further in their understanding of Foster's work if they want to.
I/ So first of all: what is the Millenium bridge ? A suspended bridge.
Cables on the sides + ballustrades + quite flat = basic appearance
Suspended bridges ?
2 types = > suspended bridges and cable-stayed bridges
Quite high piers !!!
Like these:
Brooklyn Bridge
Golden Gate:
Millau's Viaduc:
Loire's Great Bridge: (a hint of chauvinism)
But our super-flat bridge with small V-piers happens to be very different.
II/ Then, what makes it different from the others ? Is this different significant ?
3 set of stuffs:
- Its basic architecture + made for pedestrians only
Cables, glass, aluminium, steel ==> Foster's high-tech inspiration
cf this one: MacLaren Technology Center, Woking
+ it was my with Anthony Caro, Arup (Pompidou center), not far from his friend Rogers (O2 Dome) ==> cross inspiration
And then: the Blade of Light over the Thames - Night and Day/Saint Paul's Cathedral/ Tate Modern (Following Foster's idea on link between architechture and inhabitants)
-The Wobbly Bridge
In the 1950's there was a little problem with Tacoma Narrows Bridge in the US (which eventually lead to these so high pylons):
The phenomenon of resonance ! And unfortunately, unexpected consequences on the Millenium Bridge !
-The Millenium Project ! Part of global reshaping of the city
O2 Arena's Dome (Rogers):
The Millenium Eye:
