CONCLUSION THOMAS CHIPPENDALE
Chippendale was not only a furniture designer but an artist. As Deyan Sudjic states, there is a connection between art and design. His luxurious items, his variety of styles and the meaning of each of his objects, show the powerful sign of Chippendale´s design. It was a style that dominated American furniture until the 1770s and that introduced an exquisite and extensive carving. He was a designer that incorporated to his design not only an English taste but a Gothic and even a Chinese one. Despite this, London´s Society of Arts never accepted him. Chippendale´s furniture was a combination of luxury, fine taste and architecture and we can assess his influence when some years ago estate agents asked for a price of 6.75 million pounds for the Dumfries house. However, Prince Charles decided to buy the house and it is now administered by the National Trust. This fact shows the position he occupies in design as he was a synonym of tradition and luxury. He was a designer with a style that could adapt to different interiors and his book is a grounding stone to understand his career. He was an individual that made of his object something with meaning and resonance.
